I am happy knowing of this work on the spiral, artists at work on the spiral, seeing it through, making some improvements, cutting some corners that remain, streamlining the spiral. I feel though a certain responsibility to represent and speak for those who do not comprehend the importance of this pursuit, to work upon the spiral.
- The spiral has great personal meaning for me. I encourage the students to find their own meaningful shapes.
But you advocate for the spiral.
- Not at all.
And yet of the twenty students in the room, eighteen are painting spirals, and I think the other two are trying.
- A splinter group enamored of the rhombus meets elsewhere. Look, the point is this, does the light bulb light when you screw it in? Watch the physical charge in the different lines. By one the eye is ordered to advance, and by another left indifferent. Here, it moves and stops halfway—that obstruction is mistake. Somewhere the flow between the eye, the hand, the will is blocked, but can it be corrected? Two students, working side by side, one should be cleaning the other's brushes, really, but this is America, I'm not allowed to distinguish between masters and servants, not allowed to say who'll have to scramble to whose assistance as career.
