The Senator remarks: Dr. Gentile-Cheek, I urge you to resist compulsory supportive compromise and the institutional neuroses it engenders.
Compulsory supportive compromise is a harshly artificial ethic, very belated, something like
halogen, a class-based social doctrine imposed by mothers and other unelected officials.
Class-based, class-mad, fundamentally climbing, the appearance of behavior and how it will be
taken is the concern, the compulsory cloaking of intent in image, of desire in distance, the
compulsory attendance by an audience of viewers, and in the unwillingness to risk the other side's looking good a taking,
more or less, of hostages. Compulsory supportive compromise—there is an artificial maturity which
maintains that because some people would never, could never compromise except under
compulsion, other people—us—we must volunteer compromise always, our compulsion is to
compromise because we have to set an example, this compulsion to be the most perfect is
neurosis. |
